Cocaine and Addiction

Cocaine is a crystalline alkaloid that is developed through coca leaves. It is used for medicinal purposes in treating some illnesses. Unfortunately, using the drug may lead to addiction. Cocaine comes in several forms including powder, vapor and rock crystals. Crack is a term for cocaine in the form of rock crystals. Of all the variants of cocaine, crack is the worst to get addicted to since it permanently damages the brain.

Cocaine is similar to speed. Circulating in the body, it provides a high which fades after awhile. Once the high has completely faded, the craving for additional doses begins. To start with, the first dose is small. People mostly try it out of curiosity. Those with sense enough to stop once their curiosity has been satisfied are the lucky ones. Because of the high, those who tried it once would like to experience it again telling them selves this second dose will be the last. This leads to dependency and addiction. Some people will snort a line of cocaine through their nose. As the body starts to fight the effects of cocaine, the line increases in length. Once the body fully develops its immunity to cocaine, the switch to crack cocaine or heroin begins. Full-fledged drug addicts will constantly need to increase the dose of the drug they take to feel its effects. The more drugs they need, the more expensive it becomes to sustain the habit. Unlike people who stop when they cannot afford a hobby, addicts will resort to any means to be able to get their dose of their chosen drug.

A startling, statistical fact is that prescription users of cocaine contribute a larger percentage to cocaine addiction than regular drug addicts do. Cocaine addicts can be found in all walks of life. People in every profession have been known to be cocaine users. Doctors, lawyers and justices are not immune to cocaine addiction. A police officer was even arrested for hosting a cocaine session in his house.

In terms of the lengths addicts will go through to finance their addiction, some of them turn into drug pushers by selling cocaine to buy the more expensive heroin. This illegal form of livelihood actually adds to the availability of addictive drugs in the streets. Some even sell their children own children just to get their snort.

Drug addiction may cause paranoia. Unfortunately, this paranoia is not of the drug. If anything, it is best to be out of the addicts’ way when they look for the resources for their next fix. They will do anything for their next fix. Their god is the drug. They would deliberately steal from their own families.

Crack addicts are by far the worst types of drug users. They will sell their children, kill their children, kill other people or sell their own bodies in the name of crack.

Fortunately, some people come to their senses in life and stop using the drugs. While this is rare, it does happen. Unfortunately, most of those who stop cannot resist the lure of getting high.
